Bonner Program

Summer Service Guidelines

Centre College

Summer 2009

1.  Every Bonner Scholar must complete at least 2 summers of full-time community service, and Bonner Leaders are eligible to apply to participate in at least 2 Summers of Service.  A Summer of Service is defined as: at least 280 hours of community service over at least seven weeks.

2.  Summer service is optional for third year Bonner Scholars who have satisfactorily completed two summers of service. They are required to do at least 140 hours that need to be approved by the Foundation.

3.  The maximum hours per day that may be counted towards meeting the Bonner summer hours requirement is 10 hours, therefore the maximum number of hours that may be “earned” in a week is 70 hours (7 days x 10 hours). Bonners may count half of their travel time toward monthly totals.

4.  All students participating in summer service must complete a Summer Service Community Learning Agreement through BWBRS.

5.  All students participating in summer service must log their hours in BWBRS at least once every two weeks.

6.  The Coordinator and Director must approve the summer service site(s) before a student can begin their service at the site.

7.  Reflections (clearly labeled with the date & the Bonner’s name) must be sent digitally to the Director at least once every two weeks.

8.  All Bonners are strongly encouraged to take photographs of their summer activity, and to incorporate pictures of themselves doing service in those photos for use in Bonner publications and the web site.

9.  Bonners who satisfactorily complete their summer service will receive a total of up to $2500 issued in the form of checks made out directly to the Bonner at the address of their designation.  Bonners will be issued half of their summer stipend at the beginning of their term of service and the second half once all final paperwork has been received and hours entered.

10.  Bonners are* allowed to receive payment for their service, but notification of both the Bonner Director and the host agency is required in the interest of full disclosure. *(updated from summer 2006)

11.  All service must be completed by August 15, 2009, in order for it to count towards the Summer Service Requirement.

                         12.  Hours spent serving during the annual First Year Trip may be counted as Summer of                          Service hours.
